‘COVID-19 and Commercial Banks Profit’

The commercial banks of Nepal have earned Rs 54.30 Arba in net profit in this FY 2076/77. The total profit is 12 percent lower than the previous fiscal year. The fall in the profit is mainly due to the impact of COVID-19 on the deposits and lending. With a decline in interest rate spread, the net income of many banks has also declined. Only 6 commercial banks have increased their profit as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Banks earnings tell you the most about the nation’s economy as a whole because banks trade with, lend to, and take money from every segment: consumer, retail and corporate. Banks are putting aside more capital to cover losses on business and real estate loans, as well as credit card and car loans. Banks are also earning less from lending because interest rates are so low. The biggest banks are also able to make money from parts of the economy that are thriving; “the capital markets, equity and debt underwriting, and asset or wealth management.” The smaller, regional and community banks are more exposed than big banks to the rise of consumers and businesses defaulting on their loans as the pandemic continues.
They will likely lose money for the upcoming year because of the pandemic, but most are also expected to keep paying dividends to shareholders. Banks could eliminate dividends as a PR move, to show they’re saving in a down economy. The impact of the coronavirus crisis won’t show up until the first quarter. Some will soften the blow with profits from administering federal stimulus programs. However, not all banks were equally impacted. The declination in the ratio of lending money by banks indicates a negative sign of the economy because the loan would have been utilized in increasing inventories, procurement of technologies or to hire people.
